Generally, keeping an area clean of food and trash helps prevent against cockroaches but sometimes that isn’t enough. Different cockroaches gravitate towards different resources, so cockroach identification is important before treatment. For example, German cockroaches search for an abundance of water so ensuring there are no sources of leaks help reduce the chances of a German cockroach infestation. In addition, it also helps to strategically place roach motels, bait traps, or sticky traps to identify the severity of your cockroach problem. If an infestation has gotten out of hand it’s time to find professional pest control to help eliminate your cockroach problem.
Inspection & Identification
Cockroaches are commonly found outdoors in moist, dark locations all over southern California. When conditions become unfavorable, "Water Bugs" are known to come inside seeking more pleasant temperatures, sources of water and food for their offspring. Griffin Pest Management's service begins with a licensed technician providing a full inspection of your residence and property. During the inspection, your cockroach control technician will identify potential problem areas around your home or office. After the source of your problem areas have been identified, your technician will point out other potential Water bug harborages and steps you can take to reduce future cockroach infestations. Your technician will create a customized cockroach treatment plan which will eliminate all live cockroaches. Your technician will also suggest treatment options which provide year-round protection, using the most effective and environmentally conscious cockroach control solutions.
Bait Systems
Cockroach baits come in 3 forms: liquid, gel, solid. These baits are strategically placed where cockroaches are known to dwell. Once cockroaches consume the bait, they are infected and will continue to spread infection as they come in contact with other roaches in the harborage areas. In addition, cockroaches are cannibalistic so they will consume infected cockroaches which increases the efficacy of the bait.
Chemical Treatment
Chemical treatment can be used in several ways. The most common being interior and exterior applications of insecticides. Initial treatment consists of low toxicity, non-repellent chemicals which are undetectable to cockroaches. The treatment covers the affected roaches as they travel and is transferred from cockroach to cockroach, killing the colony just like a virus. This has a residual effect and will continue to impact cockroach populations for some time after application. Exterior and entry point treatment act as protective barriers that poison cockroaches as they try and enter your dwelling preventing them from lasting long enough to start a reproductive cycle. For the most intense infestations, fumigation might be required which permeates all wall cavities and ensures that all cockroaches are exposed to the toxins necessary to wipe out every cockroach.
Sanitation & Exclusion
Proactive measures like keeping a space clean will also help prevent cockroaches from taking hold. Removing open food sources and eliminating harborage areas will ensure that cockroaches are not able to find the resources they need to make a house their home. In addition to cleaning, ensuring that all cracks are sealed and laying down a perimeter application will help ensure that cockroaches can’t enter your dwelling.
The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting cockroaches and is the only pest cockroach in southern California that can fly.
The Brown-Banded cockroach has a fairly wide distribution, being found in the northeastern, southern, and midwest regions of the United States quite commonly.
The German cockroach is the most economically important urban pest. It is the most common cockroach species in houses, apartments, restaurants, hotels, and other institutions throughout southern California. These 0.5"-1" long roaches are easily recognizable by the two vertical stripes that run down their head.
Oriental Cockroaches are large very dark (almost black, but sometimes dark reddish-brown), shiny cockroaches which live in sewers and similar wet, decaying organic matter. They are sometimes called “water bugs” because they come out of drains, and “black beetle cockroaches” because of their smooth, dark bodies.
Cockroach exterminators will clear out harborage areas of debris and trash to eliminate roach attractants. Then they will close access points and provide treatment via bait systems, traps, or chemical applications.
Sometimes a house that appears clean can still have areas that get overlooked. Areas like under furniture, in cupboards, and other rarely explored areas tend to accumulate dust, hair, and debris that cockroaches will feed on. Roaches also need to find water and shelter which a home or business usually provides. Leaky plumbing in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms provide water for cockroaches to survive.
Cockroaches reproduce quickly and are nocturnal so if you notice one cockroach, there are likely many more hiding. It’s best to call Griffin to come give a thorough inspection to determine how severe your cockroach problem is just in case.
Cleaning up and sanitizing after you kill a roach will help prevent more cockroaches from appearing. Dead cockroaches release a strong odor which draws in other roaches. Cockroaches are cannibals and scavengers and will feed on the remains of any dead cockroaches.
