Opossum Control

Opossum Pest Control

Why Do I Have Opossums?

Opossums are large marsupials that are native to rural areas around southern California but have been displaced from their natural habitats. With urban development spreading to rural areas, opossums have been forced to acclimate and live near humans. Opossums are a common sight near outdoor food and water sources available to them. Fruit trees, vegetable gardens, garbage, pet food, ponds and lawn pests are all known to drawn opossums to homes in southern California. Opossums come in many different sizes and can be as large as a house cat or as small as a mouse. They are known for having long, rodent-like tails with furry bodies and a pointed snout with sharp teeth. Opossums are nocturnal and prefer dark, secure areas such as under homes, decks, sheds and garbage can areas. Opossums are very unsightly creatures and can be almost shocking to people stumbling across them late at night. When threatened, an opossum will bare its teeth and hiss or play dead. Opossums have an incredible tolerance for pain and can fool you into thinking they’ve died by “playing possum” despite suffering major injury. Opossums are vectors for disease and should be trapped only by professionals.

Opossums Are Destructive

Trash cans, lawn pests, pet food, vegetables, fruit, pet chickens and other fowl all make great sources of food for opossums. After finding a source of food, opossums look for places to construct their dens. A female opossum is preparing to give birth and has selected your attic, crawl space or wall as her new home. Opossum nesting is highly destructive! Insulation materials are typically shredded to make a nest, followed by the mother opossum urinating and defecating within the space to mark her territory. The longer the opossum stays in the attic, the more damage is done - sometimes costing the property owner thousands of dollars in cleanup and repairs! It is essential that businesses, home owners and property management companies seek professional help to remove their opossums as soon as possible.

Quick Facts About Opossums

Habits

Opossums are nocturnal creatures that feed on plants, small animals, rodents and reptiles. They will congregate in groups, near sources of food and water. When cornered or threatened, a possum will bare its teeth, hiss or play dead. Opossums have an incredible tolerance for pain and despite suffering major wounds, can play dead to fool predators into thinking they’ve died from their injuries.

Habitat

Opossums prefer dark areas, secure from other animals or predators. They often take up residence behind garbage cans, under decks, in garages or sheds, and attics. As long as they have a source of food and water nearby, they will stay and breed.

Threats

Opossums can create a large mess on your property by digging through garbage, soil or compost piles. Sometimes, they will use the insulation in your attic to make a nest and will urinate in that spot to mark their territory. They have also been known to eat pet food and small birds like chickens. Opossums can also spread fleas. The longer they go untreated, the more possums you will have to remove later.

Prevention

Opossums carry disease and other pests like fleas and bed bugs, so it is important to let a professional trap and remove them.
