Bats are winged mammals that fly at night and help reduce pest populations. That said, they will roost in your attic and can transmit rabies and carry fleas.
Birds are extremely loud and create a big mess when left alone to nest. They carry fleas and mites, and their fecal matter can cause respiratory problems.
Opossums are fierce scavengers that can spread disease like rabies. They will stick around if there is a steady source of food and water available.
Pigeons are known as flying rats due to the disease they spread and damage they cause. They are carriers of fleas, mites, and other parasites that are harmful to humans.
Racoons are nocturnal scavengers who are incredibly smart. They are one of very few animal species with an opposable thumb which gives them incredible dexterity.
Skunks are notorious for there odor shooting defense mechanism. This is to prevent dogs and other animals from attacking and is extremely effective.

Wildlife Exclusion
Once the wildlife has been removed, the access points that it was using to gain entry into your property will need to be sealed and fortified to prevent further intrusion.
Wildlife Cleanup
Once animals are no longer able to access your home, a thorough clean up of nesting materials, fecal matter and other body waste, and any other remaining traces of wildlife activity will be necessary to return your home to its original condition.

The trapping methods that Griffin Pest Management uses are ecofriendly and humane. We offer to capture the wildlife alive and remove the animals that are taking residence, so they no longer present a problem. We do not use traps designed to kill wildlife because a dead animal will attract other pest types that are scavengers like flies, ants, beetles, rodents, etc.
If you are a homeowner in southern California, you will most likely have to deal with wildlife at some point if you haven’t already. They are problematic animals that don’t mean to cause trouble but inevitably introduce diseases, parasites, and messes, while also potentially causing damages. The most common wildlife animals that homeowners deal with by season are:
- Spring: Bats, Skunks, Opossums, Squirrels, Pigeons
- Summer: Bats, Skunks, Opossums, Racoons
- Fall: Bats, Rats, Mice, Squirrels, Racoons
- Winter: Rats, Mice
Parasites: Fleas, mites, and bed bugs can all be transmitted and introduced by local wildlife. Rodents, critters, and flying animals all carry parasites which then get deposited into their nesting areas. If they nest inside your home, these parasites will expand their territory and eventually find human hosts to feed on.
Disease: Most wildlife intruders can carry diseases like rabies, salmonella, and other bacteria / pathogens that are harmful to humans. In addition to be being carriers, much of the waste produced by wildlife also comes with their own diseases like hantavirus and histoplasmosis.
Damages: Opossums and racoons will create nests in hard-to-reach areas that are left undisturbed like crawl spaces, attics, and patios. They can also dig up gardens in search of food and raid trash cans that are left unprotected. Birds and bats can leave a significant amount of waste that can cause damage to the exterior of your home.
Chimney – Chimneys are often overlooked because many have been decommissioned or blocked off but they still offer a great place to nest for birds, racoons, and rodents when not in use.
Soffit / Eaves / Dormer Gaps – These access points by your roof are where most wildlife and birds can find access into your home.
Dormer / Gable Vents – These are another flimsy obstacle that most wildlife can break through to gain access into your attic.
Doors & Windows – Doors or windows that are left open or have gaps can allow wildlife to walk right into your home.
Bathroom / Dryer / Range Hood – Any large vents that provides access to ductwork throughout your home are a place where racoons, opossums, and rodents can gain access into your home.
Deck / Patios / Porches – These places are often left undisturbed and provide shelter for racoons, opossums, skunks and other critters.

Wildlife can largely be prevented with the right steps. Griffin Pest Management uses a combination of exclusion, habitat modification, repellents, and traps to control different species of wildlife.
Animals that are caught are generally released in safe places located far away from their previous territory. In the even that an animal that is sick with a contagious disease like rabies, they will be euthanized to protect the community.
Baits are not recommended when trying to reduce or eliminate wildlife populations. This is because the poison will leach from the dead animal into its surroundings. It will also increase the presence of pests as other bugs will come to feed on the dead animal.
